English/Multi Language Learners (ELL)
The ELL Program is for students who have another language background and are learning English as an additional language. The student’s English language proficiency level determines his/her participation in the program. The goal of the program is to develop English communication and academic language skills so that students can successfully compete academically with their peers in the mainstream classroom without ELL support. Methods of instruction in the ELL Program are research-based and are taught by Highly Qualified, certified ELL teachers.
The LHS ELL program provides formal ELL instruction during assigned class periods using appropriate ELL instructional materials. A PREP plan (Program Recommendations for English Proficiency) is developed for each student and updated annually. ELL students participate in the mainstream curriculum with accommodations and support from the ELL Program. Instruction focuses on developing English communication and academic language skills through listening, speaking, reading, and writing for success in school.
The ELL Curriculum is closely aligned to the mainstream curriculum and to the WIDA language proficiency standards. Along with formal ELL instruction, students receive content-area assistance by the ELL teacher through collaboration and recommended accommodations provided to the content area classroom teachers. ELL classes at LHS can count toward elective credits.
