ELO Process

  1. Step One: Application Process.
    • The student meets with the ELO Coordinator to discuss his/her plans and request (Mrs. Gobin, S-21).
    • In some cases, an application, including parent/guardian’s signature is required.
    • Prior to beginning an ELO, students/parents discuss whether the ELO will be graded or have a Pass/Fail distinction.
    • The ELO Coordinator seeks a mentor teacher and community partner, as applicable.
    • Once all of the signatures for the application are secured, an online ELO may begin.
    • If the ELO requires a plan, the teacher, community partner, and/or ELO teacher will complete step Two prior to beginning.
    • If the student feels that the application was unfairly denied, he/she should follow the ELO Appeals Process.
  2. Step Two: ELO Planning and Implementation
    • The student, together with his/her teacher, the ELO Coordinator and/or community partner, completes a detailed ELO Plan and Contract. The ELO Planning Grid may be helpful for this purpose.
    • In implementing the ELO plan, the student should meet regularly with his/her mentor teacher, the ELO Coordinator, and the community partner, as appropriate.  The student should maintain documentation as required by his/her plan including, but not limited to a portfolio, reflective journal, research notes, and other evidence of learning.
  3. Step Three: ELO Evaluation
    • For students enrolled in online courses at VLACS, the ELO Coordinator will monitor progress each week. When the student completes an online course, the ELO Coordinator will print a transcript, submit it to administration, and send a congratulatory email to the student.
    • Students who are enrolled in courses at other institutions should print a copy of their final transcript and bring it to the ELO Coordinator upon completion of the course. The ELO teacher will submit it to administration.
    • For ELOs that require a panel presentation, one month before the student anticipates completing his/her ELO, he /she should meet with the ELO Coordinator to schedule a review. The ELO Coordinator will make arrangements for the meeting and invite all parties. The panel will make its determination based on the evidence presented.
